This is a question we are often asked. People often use the two words thinking they are the same thing, calling whiskey bourbon. Actually, whiskey is made all over the world in such places as Scotland, Ireland, Japan etc. Bourbon is a specific type of whiskey made here is the United States.
Can all whiskey made here in the United States be called bourbon? Is Jack Daniels a bourbon? You hear it called bourbon frequently, but it is not. It is a Tennessee Whiskey, there is a difference, yes. However, we will get into that on another occasion.
What makes whiskey a bourbon? It has to meet the standards listed below:
1) It must be made in the United States.
2) Contain at least 51% corn in its mash build.
3) Must be aged for a minimum of 2 years in NEW charred white oak barrels.
4) Can never contain flavor or color additives.
Jim Bean Apple, Crown Royal Regal Apple, etc. are not bourbons.
There are other requirements, but these listed are easy for you to remember. Now you know if you are drinking bourbon or whiskey. Visit our YouTube channel "Barbecue Bourbon & Blues" where we show you how to make great barbecue and also do informative bourbon reviews
